The Hidden Benefit of the Giants Superbowl Win

There are all kinds of positives coming out this years Superbowl. Between Eli's emergence as a quarterback and leader, Michael Strahan finally getting a ring, Coughlin becoming the "beloved" coach in less than a year. There is a lot of good to be found all through this story. Nothing though should make us as happy as the copycat factor.

The NFL is a copy cat league. It always has been. In the 60's the Packers physical grit won so many championships that every team in the league was built on that model. The 70's became a contest of which teams would copy them better. Turned out most years it would be the Steelers, though the Raiders gave 'em a run for their money. Then when I was younger it was the west coast offense. Bill Walsh and his Niners dominated the 80's with it and every team in league was talking up the pass first, west coast offense. Then the Cowboys tweaked that style for the 90's adding a little more focus for the run. The latest hot trend is the two running back system which showed up slightly in a few places in 2006 but became the system du jour in 2007.

If there is a team of this decade, it is probably the Patriots, and definitely would have been had they defeated the Giants. So every one take some time and be thankful to the Giants. What copy cat moves could we have expected had the Patriots managed to seal their legacy. Well let's start with the press conferences. Every coach will start giving answers in under 7 words no matter the question. Onto the sidelines, all the coaches will start looking like a Goodwill threw up on them. When the interviews go to the locker room. Every time a reporter asks a player a question they will hear about the Patriot, Niner, Viking, etc. way. Though I would just love to hear one of the Bengals police blotter regulars talking about the Bengal way.

So thank the Giants NFL fans. I do like the Patriots as a part of the NFL picture. I can find a use for them as piece to the puzzle. But I don't think I could bear an NFL full of copycats of the information free zone, that is New England.

Giants Win the Best Superbowl I've seen

In the best Superbowl I have seen, the Giants stepped up and silenced the doubters. If you think they weren't on a mission to do just that. Consider the words of Michael Strahan, who as he lofted the Lombardi trophy on the acceptance stage. He took time to mention that some announcer said the Giants had gained false confidence in the game against the Patriots that closed the regular season. He the screamed out that it was real confidence they had gained.

Eli Manning may never have to listen to a stupid comment about his leadership again. If he does happen to hear one, there will be plenty of people speaking up for him before he ever has to. He was every quarterback you needed him to be. He was Trent Dilfer as he made smart decisions with the football. I was very impressed by his willingness to audible into the run even though it never really broke big yardage, he stuck to what worked for them all year. He made good throws, even the one ball that was intercepted, which was certainly not a good throw. That was a safe throw down and away from the defense Steve Smith just had the misfortune to set it right into the defenders arms. Eli then showed me a little Brett Favre with even more of his growth by not letting that interception effect his play for the remainder of the game. He then pulled out his John Elway by leading them down on a game winning drive. He even squeezed a little Tony Romo into that final drive on the play where he was surely about to suffered game changing sack. He instead wriggled out of it and hucked it to David Tyree who managed to catch the ball by pinning it to his helmet. He closed out the game by pulling the Tom Brady and winning it all. Oh, and the final QB on the every qb list, big brother Peyton. He managed to impersonate him by winning the MVP.

While we pile the appreciation on to Eli Manning for the victory. Let's not be so quick to pile on Tom Brady for the loss. From the very first play of the game Brady was being knocked down, when he wasn't being sacked. He had suffered 6 knockdowns an 3 sacks by the time Tom Petty took the stage at halftime. While the numbers looked a little better in the second half, without real protection and time to throw, Brady couldn't be expected to do much better than he did. This game might actually not have been as close as it ended up had Sam Madison not fallen down covering Moss in the endzone.

For the last 6 weeks people have mocked Mercury Morris and his "don't call me when your on your way, don't call me when you're in my town, call me when you're on my block" quote. I guess the last laugh is Moriss', turns out he knew what none of us did. The Dolphins undefeated season lives in a gated community.

In the closing moments of the game I lost whatever little bit of respect I had grown for Belichick when he went all Detriot Pistons and went to the locker before the game was even over. When the Giants had finally run off that final second. Pam Oliver was the first interview on, with Plaxico Burress who held it together for a minute and then promptly started tearing up which got me looking for the can of Milwaukee's best light to drop from the sky and solve that problem.
Speaking of Plaxico Buress and his interviews. I wonder if Brady is scoffing now about the prediction they would hold them to 17. Plaxico did show his defense some love by calling for "someone to please give our defense some credit" as soon as Pam Oliver stuck the microphone to him.

Belichick Caught Filming Rams My Ex(s) Can Help

So apparently there was even more filming going on than was originally reported this year. There are unnamed sources being reported by ESPN. Apparently the Patriots filmed the walk through held the day prior to Superbowl. The Rams have made no Comment and the Patriots seem to be a little busy to discuss it today.

You know who Belichick is right now. He is that guy who wakes up at 4 in the morning to his girl sobbing at him as she go's back through his cell phone. "Who is this picture of", "Why do you need this picture " Now all of sudden it's all kinds of trouble. She is screaming at him "we went through this months ago" ,"You said that was all you had done you claimed we were starting fresh" "Now I am hearing things about you and your cheating ways again" "I told you , just tell me everything"

I am trying to be open minded about Belichick. I mean I have enjoyed the sense of humor I seen lately from him. He really could solve all this problem, just own up to everything all at once. Get this mess behind us. Let's move forward. (AHHHHH I sound like every Ex I've ever had)

• ED ASNER - Actor - Giants, 7-3. I think they're due. And they've become destiny's team. May the best team win. This is not to say that I have any animosity towards the NE Patriots and Tom Brady. They're the best people in the world.



• EVA MARIE SAINT - Actress - Giants, 38-35. I expect a "winning" score and a "losing" score, plus players sitting on the bench spitting. Giants will pull a major upset and win The Oscar.



• MARLEE MATLIN - Actress - I think it will be the Giants. I have a good friend who is rooting for New England, BIG TIME and I love to create some friendly rivalry. That's what a good game is all about. Plus, I tend to root for the underdog, except when my home team, the Chicago Bears are playing.



• DIONNE WARWICK - Singer/entrepreneur - Most people will think I am crazy but I truly believe the Giants will pull it off. (Dionne we KNEW you were crazy long before this)



• JOAN JETT - Rock star - Giants, 35-21. I'm a Packers fan and knew they were in trouble. New York is on a roll.



• DOLPH LUNDGREN - Actor/director - Giants, 21-13. This year it looks like the right Manning is in the Super Bowl. (Eli please please please, pull out the "I must break you " on Brady, at the coin toss)



• SANYA RICHARDS - Track star - Giants, 21-17. I think momentum has a lot to do with success in sports, and I think the Giants are coming into this game with a lot of momentum. They have been the underdogs the last two weeks and I think they are confident and ready for one more upset.

• SCOTT ADAMS - Dilbert cartoonist - Giants, 37-21. Eli Manning has more incentive to win because he's trying to make his parents love him more they love his older brother. Will the Patriots Keep Themselves From 19-0

Let the Jinx talk begin. The Patriots who have all year long been telling people "we are only worried about this game", "we're preparing for (insert this weeks beat down recipient here), they are the toughest opponent we have faced all season", and my favorite gem " We are on our 16th(17th, 18th... who can even keep track anymore) one game win streak"

After all this talk and humility, it turns out the Patriots might have been thinking a little farther ahead than they let on. A few weeks ago before they even took the field against the San Diego Chargers in an attempt to reach 18-0. The Patriots paid a visit to the Patent office. They applied for a patent on the phrases "19-0" and “19-0 The Perfect Season.”

Tell me again how your not looking ahead. Tell me again how the perfect season isn't on your minds. Because I have to be honest, I bought it the first time. I am not even a patriots fan and I was drinking the Kool-Aid. So now that we all know the truth. We are left with one pressing question.

Will this be the jinx, that ruins it all?

What To Do With Your Patriots 19-0 Book When They Lose Sunday

I figured out the best plan for what I am going to do with my "19-0: The Historic Championship Season of New England's Unbeatable Patriots."

First off I haven't actually ordered one and I won't because after sunday I will need two. They should be about a nickel on Ebay by Monday morning. The short sighted will attempt to dump their now useless book. Hey they might even throw in some useless Patriots Superbowl Champion swag.

So I am going to take one copy and get is signed by all the current Giants. Shouldn't be too hard right.

Now the hard part. I am going to try and get it signed by as many current Patriots as I can. With Belichick being the holy grail of signatures.

Tell me that isn't a conversation piece on your trophy shelf.

I Want To Hate Him But He Is Growing On Me

I Want To Hate Him But He Is Growing On Me

I have spent the time prior to this year with no real feeling on Bill Belichick. I mean he was a good coach but not for my team so not to big a blip on my radar. Since the begining of this year though, his profile his risen (maybe fallen would be a better word). Between the Spygate scandal, his chippy attitude about it, and the fact he was punishing the other teams for even questioning him. I really wanted to hate him, and I succeeded through out most of the year.

Things have changed, he is getting funnier and funnier over the past few weks. Partially I think it is him opening up alittle and partially I think it is the fact that as you get to know someone with that sense of humor(extremely dry, like say oh I don't know-Arizona Desert dry) it takes a bit to pick up on it.

Tha latest installment of humor was good, with him somewhat tounge in cheek about the media clamoring over Tom Brady and his ankle. Him giving them a little ribbing about there desire for the Injury Report and how excited he was to give it.

The real topper came this morning when I heard a recap of his comments shortly after landing in Arizona, to begin preparing for sundays big game. He was questioned about the fact he seemed bothered by the media and thier constant clamoring for information. I expected to hear how he fired off about how it just got in the way of the game. That wasn't even close. He first started by acknowledging that they had a job to do and what they interpereted as him being bothered was just him doing his job as well. He also acknowledged the usefulness of the media as a conduit to the fans.

I think interesting thing, is the part that goes unspoken here. The media has constantly been at odds with him buthe hasn't felt that way about he media so maybe they are the ons who need to do some re-evaluating. So here is my part of that re -evaluation.

Bill Belichick. I am sorry for a lot of the shots I fired.

Let's not get carried away though, I am still pulling for the Giants.

This Just In: Vince WIlfork might be a little dirty

Vince Wilfork was fined for the fourth time this season. This time it was for a face mask penalty that occured against the Chargers. I understand that the Patriots are going out of their way to crush people in order to erase the cheating scandal. Wilfork on the other hand is a one man wrecking crew of the Patriots cleaned up image. On the bright side I mean at least this time he didn't take out a knee or blatantly jab a guy in the eye. I already posted about the incident with the eye gouging

Now this is what the U stands
for. Football is a physical sport. Everyone who has been involved in the
game knows, things happen in a pile. The weight bearing down on a guy, the extra
elbow nudging, the pinching and grabbing, it happens. But Vince Wilfork out of
the pile and face up with a guy and you reach inside of his face mask and poke a
guy in the eye not only is that just bush league, it's soft. I am not surprised
to see a guy from the U get dirty but I am surprised to see him be so weak about
it. Then again who’s surprised I mean it isn’t like it’s the first time Wilfork took a weak shot at someone

Superbowl Preview - New England Patriots

I was going to roll out a paragraph or two about Tom Brady’s demeanor, in my piece on the New England Patriots. Looks like we might have an explanation. You know I go to TMZ for my sports news. And ESPN reports the entertainment gossip sight has a video of Tom Brady in a walking cast on Monday.

So I posted about the walking boot TMZ caught Brady in yesterday. Now they have a picture of him in cowboy boots .All of my cowboy friends (count: 00) have told me that if he can hit a club in those boots, he ain't hurt that bad.

The patriots are masters of distraction. Actually they are masters at dealing with it. Make no mistake Randy Moss is part of that Patriot philosophy. The legal issues coinciding with his sub-par performance in the last two weeks are not actually related. Those games weren’t just against the Jaguars and Chargers. They were against Antonio Cromartie and Resheen Mathis; 6’2’’, 203 and 6’1’’, 200, respectively, versus Moss’s 6’4’’, 210. In the NY Giants he will match up against Aaron Ross 6’0 193 and Cory Webster 6’0’’ 203. Obviously Webster is close to Mathis but that inch is a big deal, and Webster is not nearly the athlete that Mathis is. Randy Moss has waited his whole career for this and he will deliver.

The Patriots defense will not want to here this. Unfortunately, the reality is, a few of these guys are making their last run at a championship. they probably know they need to get it done now, not to say their age is going to hurt them in this game , I don’t think it will. Belichick always has a scheme put together to make them very effective against the strengths of the other team.

It is interesting to note though that against the teams they have faced twice this year the Patriots have not had the results I expected. I figured with a mastermind like Belichick familiarity would breed greater success, however it was a mixed bag. Against the Jets the margin of victory dropped by two touchdowns in the second meeting, against Miami they were even, winning by twenty-one points each time. Against the Bills they saw a 15 point increase in the second game. No real definitive proof to be gained from that. I also think that while Coughlin doesn’t get the same press as Belichick (some of which I am sure Coughlin is glad to miss) I have some confidence in the him, knowing that he get’s the same two weeks as Belichick, in order to prepare.

One of the interesting angles to the meeting of the minds as far as the coaches go is the fact that Belichick and Coughlin are both old school Parcells disciples. Nothing really important but if you needed one more storyline to think about there you are.

I was going to roll out a paragraph or two about Tom Brady’s demeanor, in my piece on the New England Patriots. Looks like we might have an explanation. You know I got to TMZ for my sports news. And ESPN reports the entertainment gossip sight has a video of Tom Brady in a walking cast on Monday.

Phillip Rivers Starts AFC Championship

Phillip Rivers came jogging out to start the first drive for San Diego, nothing seemed wrong with the knee, but nothing called really tested him either. Chargers went 3-and-out, not really surprising considering the Patriots defense. Not really concerning since San Diego showed last week that they could withstand an early deficit. Now can they do it against the Patriots.

I do not want to take anything from the patriots accomplishments. They definitely have the talent required but you need the little things go your way, things like running into the kicker not roughing kicker on that first punt attempt. Giving the Chargers another opportunity punt but not giving them the first down.
The first drive was a 3-and out for New England as well. Tom Brady had 2 incomplete passes which matches the entire game last week.

Under an Hour til the AFC Championship Game

So we are under an hour now til the AFC championship game. The talking heads have finally run out of things to say about the Patriots, the hype is growing like a a creature in a horror flick. I mean I just saw the ESPN piece where they covered his little known part in the Brady bunch television series. Now they are covering, what is the part of Tom Brady that is under the radar.
WHAT!?
Nothing, nothing goes under the radar, with him. You can't have anything go under the radar the guy gets more press than an OJ getting loaded with Lindsay Lohan stabbing and Paris Hilton, while he's babysitting Britney's kids. What is amazing to me is this need to sell it, I mean we are all watching, everyone who has the most marginal interest is tuned in. You've got the potential for an undefeated season on the line. Save those intersting pieces for midway through the game when the Patriots are hammering them.
